Suggestion to the students caught up in the An Ying case(03/06/2005)
2005/06/03

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Zealand attached high importance to the An Ying case in which some Chinese students have been caught up. Since January 2005, the Embassy contacted concerned New Zealand departments continuously, expressed the concern towards the case and requested that New Zealand Government take every measure possible to investigate and safeguard the interests of the students affected.

Thanks to all these efforts, New Zealand Government decided to investigate the case and assigned the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) as the lead law enforcing agency in this matter.

To deal with the case properly, the Embassy would like to give following suggestions to the students concerned:

1.     According to the advice given by the New Zealand side, SFO are investigating the An Ying case and will be the lead law enforcing agency in this matter. Please contact the principal SFO investigator directly (Mr. Reece Metcalfe, Tel: 0800 109 800 ext. 865).

2.     New Zealand Police Financial Intelligence Unit will also be involved in the case. Please contact Detective Todd Moore-Carter, Tel 04 474 9506.

3.     The Victoria University of Wellington has set up a liaison person between the affected students and the SFO. Please contact Victoria International directly. For students in other education institutions, please contact relevant departments there.

4.     It has been advised by the New Zealand side that the students caught up in the case can get in touch with the welfare officers at the relevant institutions with which they are enrolled to receive the best advice and support.
