On 20th July, Shanghai Party Secretary Han Zheng met visiting New Zealand Governor-General Jerry Mateparae and welcomed his visit on behalf of 24 million Shanghai people.
Han noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to New Zealand last November was successful and the two countries upgraded their relationship to comprehensive strategic partnership.
He said Shanghai has frequent exchanges with New Zealand and has been the sister city of Dunedin for more than 20 years. The two cities cooperated extensively in economy, trade, science and technology, and education.
Han said the governor-general can learn a lot about China and Shanghai on this tour and his visit will further promote the relationship and cooperation between the two countries, particularly the exchanges between young peoples in both countries.
Mateparae said Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to New Zealand gave an impetus to the China-New Zealand relationship. Shanghai is a dynamic city and a gateway into China. He hoped the two countries can strengthen cooperation in all fields.
He also urged young people in China and New Zealand to visit each other's country to better understand each other's culture.
