2012/06/20

On June 19, 2012, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei held a press conference.

Q: The man suspected of murdering a Chinese student Lin Jun was extradited to Canada recently. What is China's comment?

A: The murder case of Lin Jun has attracted high attention both in China and Canada. The Chinese Embassy and Consulate General in Canada took the case seriously and kept close communication with the Canadian Government and police, requesting the police to arrest the murderer as soon as possible and demanding competent Canadian authorities to take concrete measures to guarantee the safety of Chinese nationals in Canada. The Embassy and Consulate General also helped the family of the victim go to Canada to handle the follow-up matter.

China hopes that the Canadian side can have a fair trial of the case which China will follow closely.

Q: Is China worried about the possible failure of the Dialogue on the Iranian nuclear issue in Moscow to reach substantial progress?

A: China follows closely the developments of the Dialogue. We hope all sides can step up diplomatic efforts, properly handle disputes, push for progress in the Moscow talks, consolidate the positive momentum of dialogue and cooperation so as to seek a comprehensive, long-term and proper resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. Long committed to promoting peace talks, China is ready to work with other parties to continue to play a constructive role for the peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic means.

Q: It is reported that the US House of Representatives recently passed a resolution on formal apology for the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. What is China's comment?

A: We acknowledge the move. The achievements of the US, an immigrant country, are the result of joint endeavor and cooperation of all ethnic groups in the US including the Chinese immigrants. The historical contributions made by Chinese immigrants deserve fair evaluation and due respect.

Q: It is reported that Vietnamese airforce fighters flew to some islands of the Nansha Islands for so-called "patrol and surveillance". What is China's comment?

A: China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters. Relevant actions of Vietnam are a severe infringement upon China's sovereignty. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction. We demand the Vietnamese side to earnestly abide by the consensus reached between China and Vietnam as well as the spirit of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and refrain from taking actions that may complicate or magnify the situation with a view to making its due contribution to regional peace and stability.
