Premier Wen Jiabao Attends a High-Level Round Table of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development and Delivers a Speech

On June 20, 2012, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council attended a high-level round table of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro and delivered a speech entitled "Seeking Innovative Ideas, Taking Pragmatic Actions and Adhering to the Road of Sustainable Development with Chinese Characteristics".

Wen said that China is a staunch supporter of the concept of sustainable development. China proposes the people-centric scientific development concept putting emphasis on comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development, and aims to build a resource-saving, environment-friendly society and an ecological civilization and take a new path of industrialization; China is an active practitioner of sustainable development strategy. China takes account of economic development, social progress and environmental protection as a whole and is among the earliest country to achieve the MDG target of halving the proportion of people living below the poverty line; China is a strong facilitator of international cooperation for sustainable development. China actively carries out South-South cooperation, promotes North-South cooperation, and actively participates in the activities of international organizations. China earnestly implements international conventions and has made due contributions to the sustainable development of the world.

Wen said that there is still a long way to for China to promote sustainable development. China will fully implement the "12th Five-Year Plan", accelerate the transformation of economic development mode, adjust and optimize the economic structure. China will promote international cooperation more actively, participate in global governance for sustainable development, and gradually increase assistance to other developing countries. China will join hands with the international community to create a better home for future generations.
