Dinosaurs from China Coming to the Middle Earth!(01/12/2003)
2003/11/30

Opening on 6 December 2003, Dinosaurs from China offers a rare and exciting opportunity to see some of the world's largest and finest dinosaur skeletons.

On display is a wide range of dinosaurs, many of them dating back over 150 million years to the Jurassic period. They include some spectacular specimens-gigantic lumbering sauropods, such as the 24-metre-long Mamenchisaurus, stegosaurus with their sharp spines and sturdy plates, and vicious predators such as the terrifying Yangchuanosaurus. This is a Chinese relative of Tyrannosaurus rex, with sharp, jagged teeth, long claws, and sturdy arms-ideal for tearing up the flesh of its prey!

Dinosaurs from China serves as a great introduction to the study of fossils, and a special Dinosaur Trail activity has been developed for younger children. Highlights in the exhibition include information and objects relating to one of the most exciting areas of dinosaur discovery in recent years - the evolutionary connection between dinosaurs and birds.

Time: 6 December 2003 - April 12 2004.
Venue: TOWER Gallery. Te Papa - the National Museum of New Zealand
Admission prices: Adults $9.50  Children (4-14 years) $4.50

Dinosaur Exhibition Outstanding Success (Press Release: Otago Museum, Friday, 7 November 2003 )

The biggest dinosaur exhibition ever seen in the southern hemisphere has outstripped all previous Otago Museum visitor numbers by attracting more than 50,000 people, making Chinese Dinosaurs a success of Tyrannosaurus proportions!

On closing, 50,196 visitors had viewed the exhibition of real dinosaur skeletons from the Beijing Natural History Museum and the Zigong Dinosaur Museum. Adults and children alike packed the Museum to view and learn about dinosaurs and explore the other galleries.

"It was tremendous to be able to provide our community with the very rare opportunity to see such a wonderful exhibition", says Museum Director, Shimrath Paul. "To attract such a large audience, and exceed expectations, has been excellent."
