New Zealand FM Meets Senior Chinese Official(05/06/2002)

  New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Phil Goff met with Guo Jinlong, the top officialof China's Tibet Autonomous Region, and his party here Wednesday.
  Guo, who arrived in New Zealand on Sunday as guest of the New Zealand government, will conclude his visit and leave for Australia on Thursday.
  During the meeting, Guo highly appreciated the growth of China-New Zealand relations and briefed on China's basic position on the Tibet issue.
  With the strong support of the Central Government and people all over the country, and the long-term efforts of the Tibetan people, Tibet has made great progress in economy, culture, environment protection and other fields, Guo said, adding that thelives of the Tibetan people have improved a lot and the region will surely have a brighter future.  
  Goff said the New Zealand-China relations have been growing in past few years in politics, economy, culture and other areas.
  He told Guo that during his visit in China last year, he witnessed the rapid economic development of China and tremendous changes in Tibet.
  Goff said he is convinced that the bilateral ties of New Zealand and China will surely advance in future.
